The Barnes and Mullins Empress BJ504BWGT Gaelic-Irish Tenor Banjo is a truly beautiful sounding and looking banjo. Since Barnes and Mullins use burl figured walnut on the resonator and walnut on the neck you have a banjo that looks like a real vintage instrument. In addition the chrome detailing and the rolled brass tone ring furthermore create this illusion, yet the BJ504BWGT is a modern day manufactured banjo. The Gaelic Irish tenor banjo is great for playing a whole variety of musical styles including Celtic traditional, country, folk, bluegrass and jazz.
The Gaelic-Irish tenor banjo is typically used is a melody instrument when compared to a normal tenor banjo. It also has a shorter scale length to accommodate for the different tuning.
Barnes and Mullins created the Empress BJ504BWGT in memory of the “RMS Empress of Ireland” steam ship. This sank on Canada’s St Lawrence River in May 1914 with the loss of over 1000 lives. Consequently Barnes and Mullins created a beautiful musical tribute to all the lives lost that day, including Mr Albert Mullins.
